Is it just me or does it seem like new burger joints are popping up all over the place? I think it's safe to say that 2017 has been the year of the burger food trend wise, but this saturation means that it takes something special to really stand out. Luckily for us Midlanders we've had another really excellent offering open up in the fair city of Leicester called Boo Burger.
It's a bit of a running joke amongst my friends that boo is my go to affectionate name that I use all too often so I was hoping this namesake restaurant wouldn't disappoint and it certainly didn't. Boo is fast food style operation where you order and collect at the counter, but the quality is far from chain restaurant levels.
The menu at boo is short but sweet which is what I like in this style of eatery. There are six burger options to choose from - four made from Aberdeen Angus beef, one from chicken and then the 'Booloumi' veggie option which was my choice.
Fries come in either skin on rustic style or crinkle cut crispy style with the option of a cheesey sauce topping and there are sides of chicken wings and chicken bites in either buffalo sauce or sticky sauce. As for drinks they do awesome milkshakes or refillable soda from a serve yourself machine which includes their mysterious 'blue drink' which I am now addicted to. If you remember blue slush puppies, imagine one of those melted and fizzy - deliciously terrible!
My 'Booloumi' burger was really excellent with thick slices of golden fried halloumi cheese, crispy onion strings, tomato slices and lettuce in a brioche bun drizzled with a sticky sweet and hot sauce. I like a veggie burger that isn't pretending to be meat and this was a fabulous example of one with a great texture and complex, fresh flavour.
My husband went for 'The Haystack' which was composed of juicy Angus beef patties topped with crispy onion strings, american cheese, gherkins and house burger sauce. I tried a bite and it really was fabulous - definitely one of my top ten burgers. The meat was super fresh tasting and obviously great quality with it's savoury beefiness perfectly complimented by the crisp onions, vinegary gherkins, creamy cheese and luscious burger sauce. It was a classic burger done to perfection.
We decided to try both flavours of the chicken bites because we couldn't pick between them and believe me these babies are incredible! So moist and tender with a crispy coating and then doused in delish sauce - my favourite was the sweet and hot sticky sauce but Pete preferred the tart spiciness of the buffalo sauce. These were so good I really want to go back to try the 'Chickaboo' burger because if it's as good as these babies it will also be a new favourite!
We had the crispy crinkle cut fries and Pete opted for the cheese sauce which was like the liquid cheese you see in the USA. It's not my cup of tea but he really liked it and I dunked my plain fries in more of the gorgeous house burger sauce.
This was a really great quick meal and we'll definitely be back again very soon, especially as all the staff were so lovely and bubbly. The stylish of the restaurant is great too and I love that as much care has gone into the design of the venue and even into the staff's uniforms as has gone into the excellent food. Hooray for Boo!
